Thereafter, Dr. Szu graduated from the UC Berkeley, School of Optometry (UCBSO) in 2018 with a Doctorate of Optometry.
During his time at UC Berkeley, School of Optometry (UCBSO), Dr. Szu was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa international optometric honor’s society. Dr. Szu was also presented with the Ambassador of the Year award in 2016, which represents the spirit of community at the Berkeley School of Optometry.
At graduation, Dr. Szu was presented with the Robert B. Greer Award for Excellence in Low Vision, which is given annually to one individual who demonstrated excellence in low vision at UCBSO.
Every graduating class at UCBSO is proud to honor the top student from the class with an award called the Gold Retinoscope. This award is voted by faculty and peers and the criteria of the award are judged on academic achievement, clinical excellence, leadership, and professional promise. Dr. Szu is proud to be the recipient of this prestigious award in 2018.
After receiving his doctorate in optometry, Dr. Szu completed a residency in ocular disease and primary care at the San Francisco Veteran Affair’s Medical Center in 2019. Along with providing comprehensive eye exams, he provided low vision evaluations, medically necessary contact lens fittings, and co-managed a wide variety of ocular disease.
His academic responsibilities included lecturing for continued education as part of the resident lecture series at Fresno Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Palo Alto Veteran Affairs Medical Center, and at UCBSO. In addition, Dr. Szu gave presentations for continued education at the Alameda and Contra Costa Counties Optometric Society and the San Francisco Optometric Society.
Dr. Szu hopes to continue his involvement with academia and wishes to pursue clinical teaching to give back to his profession in the future.
